Many of the pilots described Tel Aviv as a modern, beautiful city. However, little of it was visible from the airport. Lydda, or Lod, then in the process of being absorbed into Tel Aviv, was a much older city, dating from Biblical times.

Many of the conversations have been pieced together from separate accounts by more than one source. Most of my sources are, of course, Warren Metzger, but these stories were often repeated by other pilots at various times in my presence.

Alaska Airlines had an agreement with KLM: ASA would carry mail for KLM into the Indonesian countries where KLM was not permitted, and KLM would, in exchange, lend mechanical assistance when needed at certain hangars.
